Northwestern coming off 11th-place finish at NCAA Championships last season
EVANSTON, Ill. (September 19, 2024) – After appearing in the NCAA Championship Finals for the 10th time in program history last season, the Northwestern University women's golf team will officially open its 2024-25 campaign this weekend at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn.
Play at the par-72, 6,516-yard course at the Vanderbilt Legends Club opens with tee times from 8:30 a.m. on Friday morning. Saturday's second round is also slated to begin at 8:30 a.m., with final-round action scheduled for 8 a.m. on Sunday morning. Golfstat will provide live scoring throughout the event.
Northwestern is part of a stacked 17-team field assembled for the event that features nine teams ranked in the Mizuno Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Preseason Top 25 Poll. That group includes the Wildcats, who are ranked 11th, South Carolina (T-No.4), Texas (T-No. 4), Texas A&M (No. 9), Arizona State (No. 12), Mississippi State (No. 16), Arizona (No. 17), Clemson (No. 18), and event host Vanderbilt (No. 19), which will field a pair of squads this weekend.
Led by six-time Big Ten Coach of the Year Emily Fletcher and assistant coach Beth Miller, the Northwestern lineup is set to include Elise Lee, Dianna Lee, Ashley Yun, Lauryn Nguyen, and Jiayi Wang. Hsin Tai Lin will compete as an individual.
Nguyen is coming off an outstanding 2023-24 campaign that saw her lead the 'Cats with a 71.49 stroke average across 37 rounds of play. Named an All-American by both the WGCA and Golfweek, the Seattle, Wash. native fired a team-best 24 rounds at par or better and tallied four top-five finishes, none more impressive than when she collected her first collegiate victory at the Windy City Collegiate Classic with an 11-under-par 205 (66-70-69).
Yun looks to build off an impressive debut season in which she was the third straight Wildcat to collect Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors after closing the year with a 72.68 stroke average that included seven rounds in the 60s. Dianna Lee appeared in 27 rounds in 2023-24, sharing sixth at the Illini Invitational, while Wang posted three top-25 efforts during the season.
Elise Lee and Tai Lin are set to make their collegiate debuts this weekend. Both enjoyed impressive summers ahead of their arrival in Evanston, with Lee taking home a runner-up finish at the Women's Western Amateur and Tai Lin surging to individual medalist honors at the Women's Western Junior.
Following the Mason Rudolph Championship, Northwestern returns home to host the Windy City Collegiate Classic, September 30 – October 1, at Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Ill.
