‘Cats Head To Carlsbad For NCAA Championships

Northwestern begins hunt for National Championship on Friday afternoon
EVANSTON, Ill. (May 16, 2024) – The Northwestern University women's golf team steps on to college golf's biggest stage at the end of the week when it competes at the NCAA Women's Golf Championships in Carlsbad, Calif.

The University of Texas will serve as the host to the 2024 edition of the national meet, set to take place at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa just 30 miles north of San Diego, Calif. Northwestern, which features as part of a field that includes 30 teams and six individuals, will play the par 72, 6,297-yard Champions Course.
Two-time reigning Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year Emily Fletcher and assistant coach Beth Miller are set to lead the Wildcats into their 10th NCAA Championships appearance in program history, nine of which have come during the duo's tenure. Northwestern's lineup will feature Lauryn Nguyen, Jennifer Cai, Jieni Li, Jiayi Wang, and Ashley Yun. Dianna Lee will serve as the substitute. The Wildcats will tee off Friday's opening round playing alongside Arkansas and Oregon beginning at 3:17 p.m. (CT).
Northwestern has enjoyed a banner 2023-24 season to this point, placing inside the top three in nine of its 11 events. The Wildcats closed the regular season with a pair of victories, laying claim to the team titles at both the PING/ASU Invitational and the Silverado Showdown before punching their ticket to the NCAA Championships by virtue of a fourth-place finish at the NCAA East Lansing Regional earlier this month in East Lansing, Mich.
Nguyen led a group of three Wildcats to place inside the top 20 at the regional meet. The Seattle, Wash. native carded three consecutive rounds under par en route to sharing fifth place with a five-under 211 (70-71-70).
Wang turned in one of the top efforts of her career, closing play with a one-over 217 (72-73-72) to finish 15th, while Cai, who fired back-to-back two-under-par 70s, finished a stroke back as part of a tie for 16th with a two-over 218 (70-70-78).
Yun, who tied for 27th with a 221 (76-74-71), helped the Wildcats fend off a charging field with a final-round one-under 71.
GOLF Channel will provide live coverage of the final three days of the NCAA Championships, with Golf Today kicking off each day at 3 p.m. (CT) ahead of the live coverage window beginning at 5 p.m. (CT). Monday's final round of stroke play will determine the individual champion and qualifiers for match play. Match play begins on Tuesday with quarterfinal and semifinal-round action, with the 2024 NCAA Women's Golf Championship Match slated for Wednesday.
