Junior shatters program record in the event for second time this season

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (May 1, 2024) – For the third time in as many outings, Ava Earl posted a new program record as Northwestern cross country closed out a banner 2024 on the track this past week at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa.

Earl led a dominant showing in the 5,000m run last Thursday at Franklin Field that saw all six 'Cats who competed post new personal bests.  The Girdwood, Alaska product put up a scorching time of 15:42.72 to claim a runner-up finish, coming in just 0.42 seconds back of Elon's Jette Beermann.  Earl's effort saw her best her own school record in the event, set back on March 29 at the Raleigh Relays, by nearly four seconds.

Pippa Nuttall turned in an impressive performance of her own in the 5,000m run, surging to a heat win in 16:33.88, an 18-second personal best, en route to placing 24th overall.  The quartet of Katherine Hessler (16:41.26; 28th), Ava Criniti (16:44.74; 30th), Jackie Holman (16:48.81; 35th), and Maddy Whitman (16:50.28; 38th) all finished inside of a nine-second window, with Holman shaving 15 seconds off her previous top effort in the event.

Kalea Bartolotto and Fiona Lenth carried the banner for Northwestern in the 10,000m run in the City of Brotherly Love.  Bartolotto battled her way to a 13th-place finish in 34:20.46, while Lenth came across in 34:59.05 (17th), a near 13-second improvement on her personal best.

Northwestern was also represented closer to home at the Len Paddock Open in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Saturday afternoon.  Rachel Sessa took home a runner-up finish of her own in the 1,500m run, putting up a season-best 4:38.41.

Adele Magaud topped the leaderboard in the 3,000m run, crossing in 10:05.05 on her way to a first-place finish.  Skye Ellis checked in seventh at 10:23.42, while Emily Casaclang followed with a time of 10:31.49 to take ninth.
