EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern center Matthew Nicholson announced on Tuesday that he is returning to Northwestern for his fifth season of eligibility for the 2024-25 season. Nicholson has been part of the winningest stretch in program history the last two seasons, as the Wildcats reached back-to-back NCAA Tournaments for the first time in school history.
In each of the last two seasons, Nicholson has recorded 40 blocks, tied for the 10th-most in a single-season in school history.
When Nicholson scored in double figures, Northwestern was 5-0 this past season and 20-9 when he played before missing the final five games of the season due to injury. The seven-footer recorded his first career double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds in a win over Indiana this past season. In the 2022-23 NCAA Tournament against UCLA, Nicholson converted all seven of his field goal attempts and scored a career-high 17 points, becoming the 11th player in tournament history to not miss from the field (min. seven attempts) and grab nine or more boards. The beard is back!?? pic.twitter.com/qqxLt9NHef
