Cami Henry Tosses Complete Game Gem, 'Cats Earn Series Victory at Nebraska

4/27/2024 4:41:00 PM | Softball

LINCOLN, Neb. – Cami Henry tossed a complete game gem, while Northwestern's offense capitalized on a series of timely two-out hits, as Northwestern maintained its lead in the Big Ten regular season standings with an 8-1 win on Saturday at Bowlin Stadium.

The win marks Northwestern's seventh Big Ten series victory of the season, and the 15th-consecutive conference series win dating back to the start of the 2023 season. It is the longest streak of such in program history.

Northwestern improves to 31-9 on the season and 17-2 in Big Ten play, maintaining the 'Cats' one-game lead over Michigan (16-3).

Henry was masterful in the circle, turning in her longest outing of the season while allowing just five hits and one run while striking out three. The graduate student threw just 99 pitches, including a three-pitch inning in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. Henry's last complete game came on March 26, 2023 in a win vs. Minnesota.

The Wildcats' struck first in the top of the third inning, when Kansas Robinson drew a two-out walk and Kelsey Nader followed up with a two-out single and a subsequent stolen base. With runners in scoring position, Angela Zedak came through with a two-out, two-RBI single down the left field line. Zedak now has 29 RBI on the season, second-most on the team behind Robinson (34).

As Henry continued to navigate through the Huskers' lineup, Northwestern extended its lead with another two-out rally in the top of the sixth. Izzy Cunnea recorded a two-out single to drive in Hannah Cady, and Ainsley Muno immediately followed that up with a two-RBI single to center field to drive in Bridget Donahey and Cunnea.

The 'Cats continued to add on to their lead in the seventh inning. After Nader and Zedak each recorded a single, Emma Raye belted a three-run home run to drive the lead to 8-1. It marked the eighth home run of the season for Raye, the third-most on the team behind Robinson (11) and Zedak (9).

With 26 RBI on the year, Raye becomes the fifth Wildcat in the last five seasons to record 25+ RBI in her rookie campaign, joining Robinson in 2023 (26), as well as Jordyn Rudd (51), Nikki Cuchran (35) and Maeve Nelson (31) in 2019.

Nader, Zedak and Muno all turned in two-hit performances for the Wildcats. It marked Naders' team-leading 18th multi-hit game of the season, as well as her third-straight.

Originally scheduled to play a Saturday doubleheader with Nebraska, the second half of today's doubleheader was postponed in the top of the fourth inning. The team's will resume play on Sunday at 11 am CT.
