EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 67 Northwestern men's tennis advanced to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday with a 4-1 victory over Wisconsin in Evanston. The 'Cats will go on to face two-seeded Michigan on Friday, with first serve scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Just three weeks removed from their regular-season victory over Wisconsin (1-22), the 'Cats (10-17) put together another dominant performance against the Badgers. An injury forced Wisconsin to forfeit at #3 doubles, then Presley Thieneman and Greyson Casey locked up the point with a 6-1 defeat at #2.
With another forfeit at the #6 court, the 'Cats started singles play up 2-0 on Wisconsin. Felix Nordby quickly added to that lead with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at #4, putting the Wildcats within one. After Max Bengtsson fell at #5, Saiprakash Goli provided the deciding victory at the #3 position, downing Wisconsin's Tomas Zlatohlavek 6-1, 6-4 to give Northwestern a 4-1 victory and a ticket to the next round of the tournament.
Next up, they'll be faced with Michigan (14-11) tomorrow afternoon. The Wolverines, ranked 29th in the nation by the ITA, are fresh off an upset over No. 18 Michigan State last Saturday, a match they won 5-2 to improve to 8-1 in Big Ten play. Last time Northwestern faced off with Michigan, the Wolverines won a decisive 4-0 match in Evanston.
Should Northwestern advance, they would take on either three-seeded Michigan State or six-seeded Indiana in the tournament's semifinal round on Saturday. That match is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. first serve.
