Northwestern enters postseason ranked seventh nationally
EVANSTON, Ill. (April 18, 2024) – Following back-to-back wins to close the regular season, the Northwestern University women's golf team will begin its postseason journey this weekend at the 2024 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships in Havre de Grace, Md.
Bulle Rock Golf Course (par 72; 6,314 yards), a five-time site of the KPGM Women's PGA Championship, begins its first of two seasons as the host for league meet this year. Play will consist of 54 holes, with single rounds played daily. Action on both Friday and Saturday will get underway with tee times from 7:30 a.m. (CT), while Sunday's final round is set to begin at 7 a.m. (CT).
Piloted by head coach Emily Fletcher and assistant coach Beth Miller, a duo that has led the 'Cats to three Big Ten Conference Championships, Northwestern enters the postseason as one of college golf's hottest teams. The Wildcats closed the regular season with back-to-back victories, taking home the team titles at the PING/ASU Invitational and Silverado Showdown, two wins that have propelled Northwestern up to No. 7 in the Clippd NCAA Division I rankings.
The Wildcat lineup for the three-day event, played in a six-count-four format, is set to feature Lauryn Nguyen, Jennifer Cai, Jieni Li, Ashley Yun, Dianna Lee, and Jiayi Wang.
Nguyen and Cai come into the postseason each with individual victories to their name this season. A two-time Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week honoree, Nguyen, who sports a team-best 71.37 stroke average, stormed to a first-place finish with an 11-under-par 205 (66-70-69) when the 'Cats hosted the Windy City Collegiate Classic in suburban Golf, Ill. this past October. Cai had a flare for the dramatic en route to winning the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in February, sinking a long putt on the 18th hole to close out a five-under-par 208 (71-68-69), a performance that also saw her tabbed Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week.
Yun is just over two weeks removed from a top-five finish of her own at the PING/ASU Invitational, where she carded a 54-hole season-best six-under-par 210 (68-73-69) to place third overall on the way to also securing weekly league honors. Li has four top-20 showings to her name this season, while Lee has followed up a breakout first-year campaign with a strong sophomore season, highlighted by a sixth-place finish (71-70-70=211) at the Illini Women's Invitational. Wang closed the regular season with two of her top 54-hole showings of the year, including an impressive two-under-par 214 (71-70-73) to share 15th at the PING/ASU Invitational.
Live scoring will be available throughout all three days of play via Golfstat.com. Fans can also follow the official Twitter and Instagram accounts of Northwestern women's golf for further updates.
The winner of the 2024 Big Ten Conference Championships will secure the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals, May 6-8. This year's regional sites include Auburn, Ala., Bermuda Run, N.C., Bryan, Texas, Cle Elum, Wash., East Lansing, Mich., and Las Vegas, Nev. The NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships will be hosted May 17-22 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
