Nguyen lands on All-Championship Team
HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. (April 21, 2024) – Impressive showings from Lauryn Nguyen and Ashley Yun helped propel the Northwestern University women's golf team to a third-place finish at the Big Ten Championships this weekend in Havre de Grace, Md.
The Wildcats finished play at the par-72, 6,314-yard Bulle Rock Golf Course with a one-under-par 863 (287-295-281), edging Purdue (292-289-283=864) and Michigan (288-287-289=864) to secure the program's third straight top-three finish at the league meet. Indiana (288-285-283=856) roared back to slip past Michigan State (279-283-295=857) for the team championship. Monet Chun of Michigan bested Isabella McCauley (Minnesota) and Caroline Craig (Indiana) in a playoff to take home medalist honors after all three finished with seven-under-par 209s.
After taking ninth at the 2023 Big Ten Championships, Nguyen put together an outstanding 54-hole effort to finish fourth overall. The Seattle, Wash. native raced out of the gate in Friday's opening round, piling up seven birdies on the way to a five-under-par 67, her seventh round in the 60s this season. Following a second-round 74, Nguyen was back in red numbers again on Sunday, carding a two-under-par 70 to finish play with a five-under-par 211 (67-74-70) that saw her earn a spot on the All-Championship Team.
Making the first postseason appearance of her young career, Ashley Yun joined Nguyen inside the top 10, surging to a 10th-place finish with a one-under-par 215 (75-72-68). Out of West Covina, Calif., Yun successfully improved her score throughout all three rounds of play, a showing that was punctuated by a season-low tying four-under-par 68 in Sunday's final round.
Jiayi Wang, who, like Yun, made her postseason debut, put together one of her top 54-hole showings of the season. Wang bookended her stay with even-par rounds of 72 to tally a two-over-par 218 (72-74-72), placing 20th. Jieni Li rounded out a quartet of Wildcats to finish inside the top 25, firing a final-round one-under-par 71 during final-round action to climb to 23rd at 219 (72-71-76).
Jennifer Cai totaled a 227 (78-75-74) to place 49th, while Dianna Lee landed two strokes back, finishing 55th with a 229 (76-77-76).
