Ellis, Powers ascend into top 10 in 800m run

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (April 13, 2024) – For the second time in as many outings, Ava Earl broke a program record to highlight a successful afternoon for Northwestern cross country at the Gary Wieneke Memorial in Champaign, Ill.

Just two weeks removed from shattering the school record in the 5,000m run, Earl dazzled again in the 1,500m run on a warm afternoon at Demirjian Park.  The Girdwood, Alaska native shaved over 10 seconds off her previous personal best in the event, surging across in 4:24.05 to edge out former Wildcat Kelly O'Brien's previous top mark by just over four tenths of a second.

Earl's effort this afternoon saw her top the 1,500m run leaderboard, leading a trio of 'Cats to place inside the top 10 that also included Emily Casaclang (3rd; 4:36.33) and Rachel Sessa (9th; 4:38.56).  Adele Magaud also saw action, placing 12th in 4:42.22.

The pairing of Skye Ellis and Maddy Powers climbed into the top 10 in program history in the 800m run, both winning their respective heats.  Ellis clocked in at 2:14.48, the second fastest time in Wildcat annals, while Powers posted a time of 2:20.01, a showing that puts her seventh all-time.

Closing out action for the day in the 5,000m run, Northwestern laid claim to seven of the top eight spots on the event leaderboard.  Leading the pack was Pippa Nuttall, who ran a personal-best 16:51.31, a 26-second improvement from her previous top time, to earn a runner-up finish.  She was joined in the top five by Kalea Bartolotto (3rd; 16:58.42), Maddy Whitman (4th; 17:03.43), and Fiona Lenth (5th; 17:12.98).

Also competing in the 5,000m run, Ava Criniti put up the top outdoor time of her young career in the event, racing through in 17:15.36 (6th).  Katherine Hessler (7th; 17:27.49) and Jackie Holman (8th; 17:33.62) rounded out a strong showing in the event by the Wildcats.

Northwestern continues its outdoor slate in just under two weeks, April 25-27, as it sends athletes to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. and the Len Paddock Open in Ann Arbor, Mich.
