Northwestern Rallies Late To Win Silverado Showdown

‘Cats put three in top 15 en route to second straight victory to close regular season
NAPA, Calif. (April 10, 2024) – Featuring an attack led by three Wildcats to finish inside the top 15, the Northwestern University women's golf team turned in a dominant final round as it roared back to win the Silverado Showdown in Napa, Calif. The victory, Northwestern's second in as many years at the event, sees the 'Cats close the regular season with back-to-back team titles.
The 'Cats charge to the top of the leaderboard was propelled by a final-round four-under-par 284, the top team round of day, as it finished level with Southern California (282-291-295) in the team race at 868 (285-299-284). USC's Catherine Park (69-70-70) shared individual medalist honors with Kajsa Arwefjall (73-66-70) of San Jose State after both closed play at the Silverado Resort and Spa (par 72; 6,146 yards) with seven-under-par 209s.
Northwestern was led in Northern California by the trio of Lauryn Nguyen, Jieni Li, and Dianna Lee, all of whom earned top-15 finishes.
Nguyen, just days removed from competing in the Augusta National Women's Amateur, got off to a red-hot start on Monday, birdying five of her first nine holes en route to a one-under-par 71. The Seattle, Wash. native went on to close play with an even-par 216 (71-72-73), sharing eighth as she secured her 11th career top-10 finish.
Li played a pivotal role in the Wildcats' final-round charge to the team title, tallying five birdies as part of a three-under-par 69. Wednesday's effort propelled Li into a tie for 11th, a season-best finish, with a one-over-par 217 (73-75-69).
Like Nguyen, Dianna Lee started fast on Monday, posting a season-low tying five-under-par 67 that featured six birdies. Lee, who now has four rounds in the 60s to her name in 2023-24, wrapped up the event with a two-over-par 218 (67-78-73), tying for 13th.
Jennifer Cai battled her way to a tie for 32nd, carding a 222 (74-75-73), to finish alongside Jiayi Wang (72-75-75), who competed as an individual.
Following a similar script as Li, Ashley Yun saved her best for Wednesday's final round. Following back-to-back 77s to begin play, Yun fired a three-under-par 69 to finish tied for 38th at 223 (77-77-69). The West Covina, Calif. product helped secure Northwestern's spot at the top of the team standings, birdying both of her final two holes.
