NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The No. 50 Northwestern Wildcats fell 0-4 to the No. 49 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Friday in Indiana, closing out the non-conference portion of their spring dual schedule.
Northwestern (5-11) opened the evening by putting up a fight in the doubles round. Notre Dame (9-6) claimed the first victory, but Saiprakash Goli and Chad Miller came through at the #3 position with a 6-3 win to bring the doubles point down to the final match. Greyson Casey and Felix Nordby made it close, but eventually fell 5-7, and the Irish claimed the match's first point.
In singles action, Notre Dame continued to excel. No. 34 Sebastian Dominko won in straight sets at the first position to make it 2-0 in favor of the Fighting Irish. Felix Nordby came back from a 4-6 first set to win the second set 6-1, but his opponent fought back to claim a 6-1 win in the third set and secure the third point of the day for Notre Dame. The clincher then came at #5 singles, where Greyson Casey fell 6-7 (5-7), 0-6 to his opponent to net Notre Dame the win.
On the other singles courts, the 'Cats held their own in three unfinished matches. Gleb Blekher won his first set 6-4 and was nearly even with his opponent in the second set before the contest went unfinished. Goli also held the lead when his match was abandoned, following up a 7-6 (6-4) set one victory with a 3-2 start to the second set. Miller was knotted up at one set apiece with his opponent at #6, winning set one 6-4 before falling 3-6 in set two.
With non-conference play now completed, Northwestern will take a two-week break before returning mid-March for Big Ten play. The 'Cats will open conference action on March 22 at Ohio State. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
