'Cats Shut Out No. 24 Boston University

3/16/2024 11:06:00 AM | Softball

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Northwestern earned a Top-25 win in its second day at the Garnett & Black Invitational, blanking No. 24 Boston University, 2-0 en route to the Wildcats' fourth shutout victory on the year.

Riley Grudzielanek and Ashley Miller combined for the shutout in the circle, with Grudzielanek tossing 3.2 scoreless innings to start the game before Miller closed out the final 3.1 innings to earn her third win of the season.

Grudzielanek also finished with two hits at the plate and drove in the eventual game-winning run with a two-out RBI single in the fifth inning to bring around Angela Zedak. Saturday marked the first multi-hit performance of Grudzielanek's career.

Miller entered the game with two outs in the fourth inning and came up with a strikeout to strand the bases loaded. Fresh off a dominant performance on Friday in which she allowed just one hit and struck out seven in a 1-0 setback, Miller struck out five of the 12 Boston batters she faced on Saturday while allowing just one hit.

Miller now holds a team-best 0.70 ERA in 49.2 innings pitched on the year, limiting opposing batters to a .137 average against to go along with 65 strikeouts.

After Isabel Cunnea drew a leadoff pinch hit walk to open the sixth inning, Kansas Robinson provided insurance for the 'Cats with an RBI-triple to center field. It marked the eighth different game this season in which Robinson has driven in a run. Robinson now holds a seven-game hitting streak, and has reached base in 16 consecutive games for the 'Cats.

Northwestern wraps up its final non-conference trip of the season on Sunday with a doubleheader against Minnesota (11:30 am CT) and No. 23 South Carolina. The Wildcats' game at South Carolina will be broadcast on SEC Network+, with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 pm CT.
