Northwestern Heads South for Series at Bethune-Cookman

EVANSTON, Ill. – After winning its home opener on Tuesday night, Northwestern baseball returns to the road for a three-game series in Dayton Beach, Fla., against Bethune-Cookman this weekend.
 
The set begins at 6 p.m. CT on Friday, March 1, with the middle game set for 5 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 2, and the series finale at Noon CT on Sunday, March 3. All three games of the series will be streamed on YouTube.

Home Opener
Northwestern (2-5) downed Illinois State, 5-1, behind four sixth inning runs in the earliest home opener on record (Feb. 27) at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park. With the game tied 1-1, catcher Bennett Markinson gave the Wildcats the lead on a solo home run to left center. Outfielders Griffin Arnone and Preston Knott also recorded RBIs in the inning. Kyle Potthoff started the game on the bump, hurling three scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts. Amar Tsengeg (1-0) earned his first collegiate win in his Wildcat debut, allowing one earned run over three innings with strikeouts. Jack Dyke and Drew Dickson combined to finish the final three innings. Northwestern pitching struck out nine and did not surrender a walk.

'Cat Stats
Friday starter Nolan Morr has been outstanding in both of his starts this season, going 1-1 with a 1.38 ERA (10th in B1G) over 13 innings pitched. He leads the staff with 12 strikeouts and has yet to walk a hitter.

Markinson's solo shot on Tuesday extended his season-opening hit streak to seven games. The junior from Tarzana, Calif. is batting a team-high .357 (10-for-28) over the team's first seven games.

First-year outfielder Jackson Freeman has reached base safely in each of his first seven collegiate games, and ranks fifth in the Big Ten and leads the club drawing eight walks. The Ladera Ranch, Calif. product leads the club with a .429 on-base percentage.

Opposition Position
Northwestern and Bethune-Cookman will meet on the diamond for the first time. BCU (4-4) won its Sunday game at FGCU, 5-1, before dropping a Wednesday night midweek tilt at No. 4 Florida, 9-2.
