FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Northwestern women's tennis split a pair of matches in Arkansas over the weekend, beating No. 46 Kansas 4-1 on Saturday before falling to No. 64 Arkansas 2-4 on Sunday.
In Saturday's action, the 'Cats got the day started with a pair of victories to claim the doubles point. Britany Lau and Maria Shusharina took down their opponents 6-1 at the number three position ahead of Christina Hand and Sydney Pratt, who claimed a 7-5 win at number two doubles.
Up one, Northwestern continued to impress in singles action. Kansas briefly evened the score with the first singles victory of the afternoon, but Neena Feldman quickly put the Wildcats back out in front with a 6-0, 6-4 victory in straight sets. Pratt continued the dominant start to her singles season with a 7-5, 6-1 win at the number four position, then Kiley Rabjohns provided the clinch at the fifth position. She bested her opponent 6-4, 6-3 to secure a 4-1 victory for Northwestern.
Sunday's match began with Arkansas winning the doubles point. Lau and Shusharina came away with their second victory of the weekend as a duo, but the Razorbacks won the other two courts to put themselves out to an early advantage.
The 'Cats then came away with a pair of singles victories to tie the score at two each. Hand won 6-4, 7-5 at #3 singles ahead of Rabjohns, who won her second match of the weekend in comeback fashion (3-6, 6-3, 6-0). Both Feldman and Pratt took sets to tiebreaks in their matches, but neither could come away with a win. Pratt fell 6-7 (3-7), 6-7 (1-7) and Feldman's match went unfinished with the third set tied at six apiece.
Next up for the 'Cats is their final match of non-conference action. They'll host the Memphis Tigers at Combe Tennis Center next Friday, with first serve set for 4 p.m. Following that match, the 'Cats will take a two-week break and return to kick off Big Ten play on March 16 against Rutgers.
