EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 53 Northwestern women's tennis improved to a perfect 6-0 at home on Friday with a 4-1 victory over No. 38 Memphis at Combe Tennis Center on Friday evening in Evanston. The win brought the Wildcats to 9-4 overall this season at the conclusion of non-conference play.
Action began with a competitive doubles round. Britany Lau and Maria Shusharina quickly cleaned up a 6-1 victory at the number three position, but Memphis struck back with a 6-2 victory at #1 doubles. The first point came down to the final doubles match, where Sydney Pratt and Christina Hand eventually outlasted their opponents, coming away with a 7-5 win and a 1-0 'Cats lead.
At singles, Shusharina and Justine Leong won from the top two positions in straight sets, bringing Northwestern within one. Shusharina beat Memphis' Leonie Moeller 6-0, 7-5 at number two ahead of Leong's 7-5, 6-2 victory at the first position.
Memphis garnered their sole point of the day at #5 singles before Sydney Pratt locked up the match for the 'Cats. She clinched in comeback fashion, defeating Emily Meyer 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 for the fourth point and the Wildcats' ninth victory of the year.
With non-conference play behind them, Northwestern will take a two-week break to prepare for Big Ten action, which will begin March 16 when they host Rutgers at home in their conference opener. That match is set to begin at noon.
