Northwestern Falls 74-60 to Michigan

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern women's basketball team got a 25-point showing from the bench, but fell 74-60 to the Michigan Wolverines at home Saturday.
The Wildcats (8-19, 3-13) had two players score in double figures, led by Caileigh Walsh, who had 14 points. Melannie Daley tacked on 12 points and three steals from the bench and Caroline Lau added six points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
Northwestern utilized excellent ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 17 assists on 22 made field goals. Lau's seven assists were the most for the Wildcats.
The Northwestern defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 15 Michigan turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Daley's three steals led the way individually for the Wildcats.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-3, Northwestern went on a 9-0 run with 5:48 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Hailey Weaver, to take a 12-9 lead. The Wildcats then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 14-12.
The Wildcats and Wolverines then played an even second quarter making the halftime score 30-28 in favor of Michigan.
Michigan continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 60-37 advantage before Northwestern went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Lau, to trim its deficit to 60-44 with 32 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Northwestern played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
Northwestern came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Paige Mott's layup, to shrink the deficit to 60-52 with 7:42 to go in the contest. Michigan responded and outscored the Wildcats the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 74-60. Northwestern took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
