Northwestern Falls 84-64 to Indiana

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern women's basketball got a 39-point showing from the bench, but fell 84-64 to the No. 14 Indiana Hoosiers at home Tuesday.
The Wildcats (8-20, 3-14) had two players score in double figures, led by Melannie Daley, who had a near-career-high 24 points. Hailey Weaver added 11 points, four steals and two blocks off of the bench and Caroline Lau added seven points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Northwestern utilized great ball movement in Tuesday's game, piling up 16 assists on 25 made field goals. Lau's six assists were the most for the Wildcats and Paige Mott also contributed with five assists of her own.
The Northwestern defense caused its share of mistakes in Tuesday's game, forcing 14 Indiana turnovers. Those takeaways turned into six points on the offensive end of the floor. Weaver's four steals led the way individually for the Wildcats.
How It Happened
Northwestern kept pace through most of the first quarter, and ended the first ten minutes trailing by only five, 26-21.
The Wildcats lost a little ground in the second quarter, however, and faced a 43-33 halftime deficit.
Indiana continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 64-37 advantage before Northwestern went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Daley, to trim its deficit to 64-43 with 1:52 to go in the third. Indiana countered and stretched its lead to 71-45 heading into the fourth.
Indiana kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 73-45 advantage before Northwestern went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Daley's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 73-54 with 6:07 to go in the contest. Indiana responded and outscored the Wildcats the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 84-64. Northwestern got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 15 of its 19 total points.
