Epee ‘Cats Win National Championship At Junior Olympics

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (February 21, 2024) – In a weekend highlighted by its epeeists winning a National Championship, No. 8 Northwestern fencing piled up impressive finishes across the board at USA Fencing's Junior Olympics in Charlotte, N.C.
Seeded third in the Junior Team Women's Epee, the quartet of Anna Damratoski, Christina Liu, Karen Wang, and Ava Wade-Currie stormed through the tableau with a spotless 5-0 mark en route to claiming the event title. The 'Cats toppled the top two seeds, winning a thrilling 45-44 decision over the second-seeded New York Fencing Association in the semifinals before downing top-seeded Alliance Red by a 45-38 margin to claim the title.
The Wildcat epeeists also dazzled in individual competition, all earning national points. Wang led the charge, picking up five wins in the tableau en route to a claiming bronze. Wade-Currie battled her way to a top-20 finish, placing 18th, while Liu and Damratoski came in 46th and 60th, respectively.
In the Junior Team Women's Sabre, Megumi Oishi, Amy Lu, and Adele Bois earned a spot on the podium, registering a pair of wins in the tableau to ultimately place third. All three members of the trio earned national points in the individual section of the weapon, with Oishi (18th) and Lu (20th) placing inside the top 20, while Bois finished 50th,
Samantha Serban and Juliana Hung represented Northwestern in the Junior Women's Foil to begin the weekend, each securing national points. Serban won three bouts in the tableau to climb to 31st. Hung, who claimed silver in the team section of the event as part of the Golden State Fencing Academy, landed 47th.

For a second consecutive season, the Ohio State University will play host to the 2024 Central Collegiate Fencing Conference Championships, set for February 24-25 inside French Field House in Columbus, Ohio. Saturday will feature the team competition, with individual action to follow on Sunday.
Ranked No. 8 in the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) Mid-Season Poll, the 'Cats will battle the host Buckeyes, Cleveland State, Denison, Detroit Mercy, Lawrence, and Wayne State.
