Wildcats Set to Compete at Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Wildcats are heading to West Lafayette, Indiana for the Big Ten Championships at Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. The multi-day meet will begin Wednesday Feb. 21 at with opening relays and exhibition team diving events. The next three days of the competition will begin at 9 a.m. CT with preliminary races, while finals heats will begin at 4:30 p.m. CT. The trip marks Northwestern women's swimming and diving's third trip to West Lafayette this season. The Wildcats placed second at the Purdue Invitational in November. Most recently, the 'Cats recently competed at Morgan J. Burke Aquatics Center at the B1G Duals, defeating Iowa and falling to Minnesota and Purdue.
Last season, Northwestern placed sixth at Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Ayla Spitz will make her Big Ten Championships debut. The transfer from Cal most recently claimed a win in the 200 freestyle in the B1G Duals over Iowa, Minnesota, and Purdue, clocking in at 1:44.96. In the same meet, Spitz also claimed a win in the 200 backstroke for the 'Cats, posting a time of 1:54.27.
Also making her Big Ten Championships debut is first-year Maggie Papanicholas. The breaststroker from Wilmette looks to build on a standout first-year campaign that saw her post season-best times of 1:00.76 in the 100 breaststroke and 2:12.09 in the 200 breaststroke.
