EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern, which sits in fourth place of the Big Ten Conference standings, closes out a two-game road trip by traveling to Indiana for a 2 p.m. CT tip on Sunday, Feb. 18. The game will air on FS1 with Brandon Gaudin (play-by-play) and LaPhonso Ellis (analyst) on the call, while Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst) have the radio call on WGN Radio 720 and SiriusXM Channel 381.
Boo Buie (2,020 points) will look to write his name in the history books on Sunday, as the graduate guard is just 18 points away from tying John Shurna (2008-12) for the Northwestern career scoring record of 2,038 points. The Albany, N.Y. native became just the second player in program history to reach 2,000 career points on Thursday night (Feb. 15) at Rutgers.
Last time out, Northwestern (17-8, 8-6 B1G) fell 63-60 at Rutgers in a defensive-minded battle. The Wildcats led by as many as 13 points with five minutes left to play in the first half. Brooks Barnhizer hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 58 with 1:20 left to play, but 25 seconds later, the Scarlet Knight hit a trey of their own to take a lead they would not relinquish. Buie led all scorers with 27 points and went 6-for-10 from 3-point range, and Barnhizer chipped in with his fifth double-double of the season by posting 11 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore transfer Justin Mullins played extended minutes for the first time this season, playing 27 minutes and recording eight points and a career-high four blocks.
Barnhizer's five double-doubles this season are the most by a Wildcat since Dererk Pardon posted seven during the 2018-19 campaign. The junior has posted a double-double in three of the last four games. His 13 defensive rebounds on Thursday against Rutgers were the most by a Northwestern player since Pardon had 16 against Nebraska on Jan. 26, 2017. Barnhizer is averaging 14.3 points (18th in B1G) and a team-high 7.0 rebounds (10th in B1G) per game this season.
Buie is averaging 19.2 points (4th in B1G) per game and 5.2 assists (4th in B1G) per game and is the only high-major player in the country averaging at least 18 points and 5.0 assists per game this season. During conference-only games, he is posting 21.1 points and 5.8 assists per game. He is the first Wildcat to post 20.0 or more points per game since John Shurna (20.0) in 2011-12.
Northwestern ranks second in the Big Ten and seventh nationally, converting on 39.4% of its 3-point attempts, its highest mark in a season since the 1990-91 team shot 43.4% from long range. The 'Cats made 10 or more 3-pointers in six straight games from Jan. 20 through Feb. 7 for the first time since at least 1995-96. Buie is the team's leading 3-point shooter, converting on 60 triples after making 64 last season.
The Wildcats and Hoosiers will meet for the 177th time, with Indiana holding a 120-56 lead in the all-time series. Northwestern has won three straight in the series for the first time since 2010-11 and four of the last five games. The 'Cats are looking to win their fourth straight in the series for the first time since 1933. Northwestern has won its last two games in Bloomington, 74-67 on Dec. 23, 2020, and 84-83 on Jan. 8, 2023, and will look to win three straight in Bloomington for the first time since 1914-16. Sullivan-Ubben Head Coach Chris Collins is 8-8 in his career against the Hoosiers.
The Hoosiers (14-10, 6-7 B1G) are coming off a 79-59 defeat on the road at Purdue on Saturday, Feb. 10, and have split their last four games. Malik Reneau leads the team, averaging 16.0 points, while Kel'el Ware posts a team-high 9.0 rebounds per game.
Northwestern returns home to Welsh-Ryan Arena for an 8 p.m. CT tip against Michigan on Thursday, Feb. 22. The game will air on FS1 and WGN Radio 720.
