EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern women's basketball got a 28-point showing from the bench, but fell 74-48 to the Purdue Boilermakers at home Wednesday.
Melannie Daley led the Wildcats (8-16, 3-10) with 12 points and two steals. Caroline Lau tacked on six points and a career-high four steals and Casey Harter chipped in as well with two points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Northwestern forced 18 Purdue turnovers. The Wildcats turned those takeaways into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. Lau's four steals led the way for Northwestern.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-0, Northwestern went on a 6-0 run with 5:57 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Daley, to narrow its deficit to 9-6. Purdue answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Wildcats down 18-9 entering the second quarter.
The Wildcats continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 36-17 halftime deficit.
Purdue continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 51-17 advantage before Northwestern went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Lau, to trim its deficit to 51-23 with 3:41 to go in the third. The Wildcats continued to reduce the Purdue lead, shrinking it to 57-30 by the end of the third quarter. Northwestern knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 13 total points.
Purdue kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 74-39 advantage before Northwestern went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Daley's layup, to shrink the deficit to 74-48 with one second to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Northwestern took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
