ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Britany Lau and Mika Dagan Fruchtman have been named alternates for the 2024 NCAA Doubles Tournament after falling just shy of automatic qualification over the weekend. The duo picked up two victories to reach the ITA Central Sectional semifinals, while Lau also competed in the singles bracket.
On Thursday, Lau and Dagan Fruchtman began play with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) tiebreak victory over Michigan's Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde. They continued their run on Friday in the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in straight sets over Tomi Main and Yu-Chin Tsai from TCU. Their semifinal match began with a tiebreak in the first set, with Dagan Fruchtman and Lau falling just short, 5-7, to give Baylor's Liubov Kostenko and Cristina Tiglea an opening-set advantage. The pair from Baylor won out again in the second set, 6-2, to end the 'Cats' journey in the main doubles draw.
Dagan Fruchtman and Lau played in Sunday's third place match to decide the final doubles qualifier out of the sectional. Facing off with Jade Otway and Isabel Pascual from TCU, Dagan Fruchtman and Lau dropped another pair of close sets, eventually falling 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) and coming up just short of NCAA Tournament qualification.
In the singles bracket, Lau advanced out of the round of 32 with 6-1, 6-3 victory over conference foe Marisa Schmidt (Iowa), before falling 7-5, 2-6, 5-7 in the round of 16 to fourth-seeded Alina Shcherbinina (Oklahoma).
Following the weekend's action, Lau and Dagan Fruchtman were announced as alternates for the NCAA Doubles Tournament on Sunday evening. The Individual Championships will take place from Nov. 19-24 at Baylor in Waco, Texas.
With fall tournament play behind them, Claire Pollard's squad will prepare for winter dual season - including the ITA Indoor Championships, which will be hosted in Evanston. Women's tennis' full schedule including dates, times and opponents is yet to be announced.
