EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern women's tennis opened dual season in dominant fashion on Saturday evening at home, sweeping the Butler Bulldogs 7-0 inside Combe Tennis Center without dropping a single set.
The Wildcats wasted no time during the doubles round, sweeping both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles by twin 6-0 scores to secure the match's first point. First year Erica Jessel made her dual season debut alongside senior Sydney Pratt to account for one of the wins, while first year Maia Loureiro and partner Neena Feldman provided the other.
Head coach Claire Pollard's squad kept the foot on the gas during singles play. All six 'Cats came away victorious in straight sets, beginning with Pratt, who picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 6 position. Jessel notched her second victory of the day and the first individual dual match win of her collegiate career at No. 2 singles. She was followed by Feldman, who matched Pratt's performance with a pair of 6-1 sets at No. 4 singles to clinch the match-deciding point for Northwestern.
After the victory had already been secured, Britany Lau, Autumn Rabjohns and Mika Dagan Fruchtman all added on to bring the match to its final score of 7-0. For Rabjohns, the win was the first of her career in dual match action. Her 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 5 followed Lau's dominant 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No. 3 position. The match's final point was won by first year Dagan Fruchtman, who earned the No. 1 singles spot in her first collegiate action. Her 6-3, 6-3 victory finished off the Wildcat sweep in the season opener.
With one win under their belts, the 'Cats will continue play next weekend at Illinois. Northwestern and Illinois are scheduled for a noon first serve on Saturday, January 25, in Champaign.
