Volleyball Hosts No. 10 Purdue in Friday Night Match-Up

EVANSTON, Ill. - For the second time in a week, Northwestern volleyball will host a Top-10 team at Welsh-Ryan Arena as the 'Cats prepare to take on No. 10 Purdue on Friday night in Evanston. First serve between the 'Cats (3-7, 1-1 B1G) and the Boilermakers (10-3, 1-1 B1G) is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT on B1G+.

STORYLINES:

Junior Kennedy Hill enters play on Friday ranked tenth in the Big Ten in blocks per set, averaging 1.25 so far in 2024. Her 50 blocks across the 'Cats' first ten matches lead the team, and she's the only Wildcat to record more than seven blocks in a single match so far this season.
Alexa Rousseau stands just 74 career assists shy of moving to fifth all-time in Northwestern program history. She recorded a team-high 25 last Wednesday as part of a triple-double against Maryland, making her one of five players in the Big Ten to record a triple-double this season, but one of only two to do so in a conference match.
Lauren Carter's 18 assists in the victory over Maryland were a single-game career high, and with 10 against NIU and 11 against Wisconsin most recently, she has now reached double-digit assists in three straight matches. That run has given Carter 55 assists this season - already topping her previous career high of 48 in 2022, when she was at Denver. Carter outpaced Rousseau last Friday against the Badgers, making her the first player other than Rousseau to lead the team in assists in a match this year.

THE MATCH-UP:

The 'Cats are 30-63 all-time against the Boilermakers, dating back to the programs' first meeting in 1977. Northwestern has come out on top of both of the most recent two matches, however, each in five sets. The Wildcats picked up a road victory at then-No. 17 Purdue last October after beating then-No. 12 Purdue in Evanston in October of 2022. The Boilermakers' last victory over the 'Cats came on Nov. 21, 2021, in Welsh-Ryan.

Purdue remained the No. 10 team in the country in the latest AVCA/Teraflex Coaches Poll after beginning their Big Ten slate 1-1. The Boilermakers topped No. 16 Minnesota in five sets last Saturday on the road after dropping their conference opener in straight sets to No. 4 Penn State in West Lafayette. The loss to the Nittany Lions was only the third of the season for Purdue, who also dropped matches to No. 10 Kansas and No. 9 Creighton near the end of non-conference action.

UP NEXT:

Following Friday's match, the Wildcats will hit the road to face off with in-state rival Illinois on Sunday in Champaign. That match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first serve on B1G+.
