Northwestern hosts Penn State to close regular season on Sunday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (October 29, 2024) – No. 16 Indiana (9-3-5, 7-1-2 B1G) raced out to an early lead as it handed Northwestern (8-7-1, 2-6-1 B1G) a 6-1 defeat this evening in the Wildcats' 2024 road finale at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.

How It Happened
The opening minutes featured end-to-end action that saw both teams pressing for an early goal.  Indiana saw a pair of attempts blocked away before Joe Suchecki suffered a similar fate at the other end of the field shortly after.

Samuel Sarver broke the scoreless deadlock in the 17th minute, driving a long-distance effort in at the far post to give Indiana a 1-0 edge.  Tommy Mahalic added a pair of goals over a three-minute span as the first half wore on to send the hosts into the locker room with a 3-0 lead.

After firing narrowly wide of goal in the opening minute of the second half, Brandon Clagette got the 'Cats on the board just past the hour mark.  Following a pass from Bryant Mayer, Clagette evaded a Hoosier defender in the box before besting Indiana netminder JT Harms for his second goal of the 2024 campaign.

Looking At The Numbers
- Clagette became the fourth different Wildcat to net two goals, joining Italo Addimandi, Akinjide Awujo, and Tyler Glassberg.
- Mayer picked up his team-best seventh assist on Clagette's strike.
    - Mayer's seven assists are tied for eighth all-time on the program's single-season record board in the category.
- Northwestern finished with an 8-7 edge in shots during the second half.
- Rafael Ponce de León made five saves in goal for Northwestern.
