‘Cats back in action on Tuesday at No. 25 Indiana on Big Ten Network
COLUMBUS, Ohio (October 25, 2024) – A pair of goals in the second half sent No. 1 Ohio State (11-1-2, 6-1-1 B1G) past Northwestern (8-6-1, 2-5-1 B1G) by a 2-0 final this evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
How It Happened
Northwestern showed no fear of the nation's top-ranked side, quickly going on the attack. In the fourth minute, a Collin McCamy free kick from 25 yards out struck the Buckeye wall before Fritz Volmar saw his attempt swept away.
Nigel Prince helped ensure that the game stayed scoreless just ahead of the quarter-hour mark when he chased down David Ajagbe on a breakaway and blocked his look at goal. Brandon Clagette suffered a similar fate to Ajagbe shortly after, as his one-time effort from inside the box was deflected. Tyler Glassberg forced Ohio State goalkeeper Max Trejo into a difficult stop in the 20th minute, testing the Buckeye netminder with a left-footed effort from distance.
McCamy found himself back in the mix shortly before halftime when he unleashed a blast from the top of the box that deflected just wide of Trejo's near post as the two sides headed to halftime knotted up at 0-0.
Rafael Ponce de León was called into action just 17 seconds into the second half. Ajagbe took aim at the far post, only for Ponce de León to get a foot on the effort to keep things scoreless. Prince was back at it again just over a minute later, as he intervened again as part of a sequence that ultimately saw Michael Adedokun strike the crossbar.
After being kept at bay, Ajagbe found Ohio State's breakthrough in the 55th minute, slotting in at the far post from the edge of the six-yard box to give the hosts a 1-0 edge. Luke Shreiner nearly provided the equalizer less than 10 minutes later, but sent his effort from 15 yards out high of goal. Adedokun all but settled matters in the 69th minute, scoring on the break to double the lead, 2-0, and wrap up an 11th win of the season for Ohio State.
