Northwestern picks up first win over Wolverines since 2016
EVANSTON, Ill. (October 18, 2024) – Tyler Glassberg scored in the 23rd minute of play as Northwestern (8-5-1, 2-4-1 B1G) came away with a 1-0 Senior Night win over No. 18 Michigan (6-3-4, 1-3-3 B1G) this evening at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.
Tonight's triumph, which extends Northwestern's unbeaten run to four games, is the Wildcats' first victory over Michigan since a 2-1 overtime win back on September 25, 2016.
How It Happened
After both sides struggled to generate chances in the early stages, Northwestern found the night's opening goal with just over 22 minutes gone. Following a stoppage in play for a Wolverine infraction, Bryant Mayer sent a feed near the back post that cleared a host of leaping bodies and fell to Glassberg, who headed in to give the 'Cats a 1-0 edge.
Northwestern made a pair of bids to extend its lead before halftime. Just one minute after Glassberg's tally, Jayvin Van Deventer unleashed a blast that forced a stop out of Michigan goalkeeper Isaiah Goldson at his near post. Thaddaeus Dewing came painfully close to making it 2-0 in the 38th minute, only to see his effort from close range cleared off the line by a Michigan defender as Northwestern settled for a one-goal lead at the intermission.
The Wildcats came out on the front foot in the second half, with a Glassberg one-timer forcing another stop out of Goldson with only 26 seconds gone. Scoring opportunities at both ends would prove few and far between for the majority of the frame, as Northwestern went on to close out its second Big Ten victory of the year.
