Wildcats Storm Through DeCicco Duals, Host Northwestern Duals This Weekend

‘Cats upended No. 2 Notre Dame as part of 6-0 day in South Bend, Ind.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (January 30, 2024) – No. 5 Northwestern fencing enjoyed a dominant showing this past Saturday, finishing a perfect 6-0 at the DeCicco Duals in South Bend, Ind. Across all weapons, the 'Cats boasted a 17-1 overall record.
Northwestern opened competition inside the Castellan Family Fencer Center with a trio of impressive wins, bookending a 24-3 victory over Denison with 27-0 shutouts of both Detroit Mercy and Cleveland State.
In their premier matchup of the afternoon, the 'Cats faced off with No. 2 Notre Dame, the event host. Led by victories in the epee, 6-3, and sabre, 5-4, Northwestern picked up its second upset of the Fighting Irish in as many seasons, posting a 15-12 triumph.
The Wildcats closed out their Saturday with a flourish, rolling past Wayne State, 20-7, and Lawrence, 25-2, to complete an undefeated day.
Megumi Oishi posted a team-best eight individual, leading a red-hot showing by Northwestern's sabre squad that saw Amy Lu (7-0), Sky Miller (7-0), Levi Hoogendoorn (6-0), Kailing Sathyanath (6-0), and Sumin Liu (4-0) all finished undefeated.
In just her second dual meet appearance, Karina Vasile put up a squad-best five victories for the Wildcat foilists, while Ava Wade-Currie enjoyed a breakout showing in the epee, finishing a perfect 7-0. Emma Ning (4-0), Kaylin Nguyen (3-0), and Annie Wang (3-0) also enjoyed unblemished showings.

Northwestern looks to carry over momentum from this past weekend when it returns to the friendly confines of Ryan Fieldhouse to host the Northwestern Duals, February 3-4.
The 'Cats are set to matchup against six ranked foes across the two-day event, including a rematch against No. 2 Notre Dame on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. Prior to Sunday's finale against Fairleigh Dickinson, Northwestern will honor its senior class in a special ceremony that is slated to begin at 12:50 p.m. Admission to both days is free of charge.
