EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern women's basketball team got a 21-point performance from the bench, but fell 93-52 to the Illinois Fighting Illini at home Sunday.
Maggie Pina led the Wildcats (7-10, 2-4) with a season-high 11 points and Caileigh Walsh contributed eight points, six rebounds and three blocks. Paige Mott tacked on eight points and six rebounds as well.
Led by Walsh's four offensive rebounds, Northwestern did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 14 second chance points.
Northwestern did a great job disrupting Illinois shots in the contest as well, coming away with five blocks. Walsh's three rejections led the way individually for the Wildcats.
How It Happened
Northwestern struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-11 at the end of the first quarter.
The Wildcats continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 45-21 halftime deficit.
Illinois continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 62-29 advantage before Northwestern went on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit to 62-35 with 1:00 to go in the third. Illinois countered and stretched its lead to 67-36 heading into the fourth.
Illinois kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing an 85-41 advantage before Northwestern went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Hailey Weaver's three, to shrink the deficit to 85-47 with 4:19 to go in the contest. Illinois responded and outscored the Wildcats the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 93-52. Northwestern fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 16 points.
