Northwestern falls 91-72 to Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Northwestern women's basketball team got a 35-point performance from the bench, but fell 91-72 to the Michigan State Spartans on the road Wednesday.
The Wildcats (7-11, 2-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Melannie Daley, who had 18 points. Hailey Weaver tacked on 15 points and two steals from the bench and Caileigh Walsh chipped in as well with 10 points.
Northwestern shared the ball well in Wednesday's game, racking up 24 assists on 29 made field goals. Individually, Caroline Lau led the way for the Wildcats with six assists and Casey Harter also chipped in with four assists of her own.
How It Happened
Northwestern struggled out of the gate, falling behind 21-11 at the end of the first quarter.
The Wildcats continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 50-28 halftime deficit.
Michigan State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 70-44 advantage before Northwestern went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Daley, to trim its deficit to 70-52 with 45 seconds to go in the third. Michigan State countered and stretched its lead to 71-52 heading into the fourth. Northwestern played well near the basket, scoring 16 of its 24 points in the paint.
Northwestern could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 91-72. Northwestern got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 12 of its 20 total points.
