SEATTLE, Wash. (September 20, 2024) – A goal in the 20th minute by Peter Kingston gave host Washington (4-2-3, 1-1-1 B1G) a lead it would not relinquish as the Huskies defeated No. 20 Northwestern (5-3-0, 0-2-0 B1G) by a 2-0 final this evening at Husky Soccer Stadium in Seattle, Wash.
Â
How It Happened
Thaddaeus Dewing nearly gave Northwestern a dream start three minutes in when he headed a Tyler Glassberg cross off the crossbar. Rafael Ponce de León denied a golden opportunity for the hosts in the 10th minute, turning away Richie Aman to shutdown the Huskies on the break.
Â
Kingston delivered the night's opening tally with just under 20 minutes gone, sending a left-footed try from 25 yards out past a diving Ponce de León to give Washington a 1-0 lead it carried into halftime.
Â
Nearing the hour mark, Akinjide Awujo looked to get the 'Cats back on level terms when he found himself on the end of a through ball from Collin McCamy. Awujo took aim at the near post from a tight angle, but saw his shot collected by Washington goalkeeper Jadon Bowton. Ponce de León kept the margin at one in the 70th minute, parrying away Joe Dale's blast.
Â
After seeing Washington add a second through Nick O'Brien in the 86th minute, Northwestern was awarded a penalty kick in the 89th minute when, after video review, it was determined that the Huskies were guilty of a handball inside the 18-yard box. Bowton preserved the shutout, diving to deny Reese Mayer's attempt from the spot as Washington went on to close out a 2-0 victory.
