Cai leads Northwestern on individual leaderboard
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (September 12, 2023) – The Northwestern University women's golf team posted an impressive final-round showing as it closed the season-opening Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. on Tuesday afternoon.
The Wildcats fired the second lowest final-round score of the day at the UNM Championship Course (par 72; 6,354 yards), posting a 285 to finish the event as part of a tie for 12th place at 886 (302-299-285). Pepperdine (292-270-288=850) finished 10 strokes clear of second-place Kansas (302-284-274=860) to top the team standings, while Kent State's Veronika Kedronova (66-71-70) and UNLV's McKenzi Hall (72-64-71) shared medalist honors after both totaled nine-under-par 207s.
Jennifer Cai led the way for the 'Cats on the individual leaderboard. In what was the theme of the day for Northwestern, the Irvine, Calif. native, who competed as an individual, turned in her top 18-hole effort of the last two days during final-round action, handing in a one-under-par 71 to earn a share of 17th with a one-over-par 217 (72-74-71).
Lauryn Nguyen and Dianna Lee both made pushes up the leaderboard with under-par efforts on Tuesday. Nguyen tied for 28th with a 219 (76-73-70) following a two-under-par 70, while Lee shot the top 18-hole effort of the week for Northwestern, using a three-under-par 69 to rise to a tie for 39th at 221 (78-74-69).
The pairing of Ashley Yun (72-76-74=222) and Jiayi Wang (76-76-74=226) closed play in the Land of Enchantment with two-over-par rounds of 74, sharing 41st and 54th, respectively. Jieni Li wrapped up her week on a high note, firing an even-par 72 on her way to tying for 59th with a 227 (78-77-72).
