Nguyen Tops Leaderboard As ‘Cats Take Second At Windy City Collegiate Classic

Junior finishes 11-under-par en route to first collegiate win
GOLF, Ill. (October 4, 2023) – Lauryn Nguyen surged to individual medalist honors, while the Northwestern University women's golf team earned a runner-up finish as the Wildcats played host to 14 of the nation's top teams at the Windy City Collegiate Classic in Golf, Ill. this week.
The 'Cats closed the 54-hole event at the Glen View Club (par 72; 6,368) with a 23-under-par 841 (279-282-280), edging out Oregon (280-282-280=842) by one stroke for second place. UCLA laid claim to the team title with a score of 832 (272-280-280).
Nguyen wasted no time announcing her presence this week, opening play with a first-round six-under-par 66 that featured six birdies and an eagle. After carding a second-round two-under-par 70 to close Monday, the Seattle, Wash. Native wrapped up play with a three-under-par 69 during final-round action that featured an eagle on the par-four fifth hole. Nguyen closed play with an 11-under-par 205 (66-70-69) to finish with a two-shot edge atop the leaderboard.
Jennifer Cai joined Nguyen in the top 20, handing in a four-under-par 212 (69-72-71) that saw her earn a share of 20th place. Cai sunk four birdie putts as part of her top round of the event, a three-under-par 69 recorded during the event's opening round.
Ashley Yun bookended her two-day stay at the Glen View Club with two-under-par 70s as part of a three-under-par 213 (70-73-70) to tie for 27th, while Dianna Lee used a second-round five-under-par 67 to finish with a two-under-par 214 (75-67-72) on her way to finishing as part of a tie for 34th. Jieni Li fired her low round of the week on Tuesday, posting a two-under-par 70 to climb into a tie for 49th at 218 (74-74-70).
Jiayi Wang (T-74th; 74-76-76=226) and Sarah Thornton (80th; 79-83-78=240) both competed as individuals for the 'Cats.
