EVANSTON, Ill. – Following a 3-1 road win at Toledo, No. 20 Northwestern women's soccer returns home to host Boston University. Kickoff from Martin Stadium is slated for 7 p.m. CT on B1G+.
Against Toledo, the Wildcats struggled to break down the Rocket defense for much of the first half until Caterina Regazzoni found the back of the net in the 41st minute to break the scoreless deadlock. Northwestern followed that up quickly in the 44th minute by subbing on Jaelyn Eisenhart, who tallied her first goal in a Northwestern uniform with her first touch of the game. The 'Cats came out of the halftime break hot, looking to extend their lead, and Ingrid Falls did so in the 55th minute, launching a strike from outside the 18-yard box in the 55th minute to give NU a 3-0 advantage. In the 85th minute, Toledo was awarded and converted a penalty kick, the first goal allowed by the Wildcats in the 2023 season, snapping the shutout streak at 354 minutes and 58 seconds.
The triumph over Toledo moved the Wildcats to 3-0-1 on the 2023 season, Northwestern's best four-game start to a season since 2018. NU's 14 goals are the most through four games in program history. Over that span, the Wildcats are outshooting their opponents by an average margin of 16.3 shots per game.
After tallying three goals and five assists over two games, Josie Aulicino was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and selected to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week. Against Oakland, Aulicino recorded arguably the best single-game performance in Northwestern history, tallying three goals and three assists for nine points, breaking Northwestern's single-game points record. Aulicino's nine points are also the second-most nationally in a game this season. With six assists, including five in the last week, Aulicino ranks first in the NCAA.
After a one-week hiatus, Northwestern returned to the United Soccer Coaches Poll at No. 20 this week.
Four different Wildcats (Josie Aulicino, Meg Boade, Aurea del Carmen, and Ella Hase) have tallied a goal and an assist in the same game this season.
Sunday's matchup will mark the fourth all-time meeting between Northwestern and Boston University on the pitch. The Terriers lead the series 2-1, with NU taking the most recent meeting 2-0 on Aug. 28, 2015.
The Terriers enter Thursday's contest at 2-1-1, with wins over Vermont and UAlbany. Reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year Giulianna Gianino leads the Terriers with a goal and an assist on the season, scoring the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Vermont in BU's 2023 lidlifter.
Following Thursday's matchup, Northwestern will hit the road to take on Vanderbilt on Sunday in a rematch of the 2022 NCAA Tournament Second Round. Kickoff from Nashville is set for 1 p.m. CT on SECN+.
