Northwestern Hosts NJIT In Sunday Matinee

EVANSTON, Ill. – After defeating St. Thomas in a 2-1 thriller the 2023 season opener, Northwestern will host NJIT at Martin Stadium on Sunday, August 27. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. CT on B1G+.
Northwestern took a 1-0 lead on St. Thomas early in the second half behind Brandon Clagette's second career goal in the 47th minute. St. Thomas found the equalizer just 10 minutes later in the 57th minute. The game remained deadlocked at one until Ibraheim Obeid served in a corner kick in the 90th minute that took a few deflections before falling to Justin Weiss who slotted it past the Tommie goalkeeper for the game-winner.
Northwestern is searching for its first 2-0 start since 2014 when the 'Cats defeated Quinnipiac and Hofstra to open the 2014 campaign.
Three players (Jackson Weyman, Nigel Prince, and Peter Riesz) tallied all 90 minutes against St. Thomas.
Eight Wildcats (Jackson Weyman, Owen Noverr, Peter Riesz, Kai Reis, Fritz Volmar, Henri Richter, Bryant Mayer, Tyler Glassberg) made their Northwestern debut on Thursday. Noverr and Riesz both earned the start in their first collegiate game.
Sunday's meeting will mark the first match-up between Northwestern and NJIT. It will also mark the first time that Northwestern has played a team from the America East Conference.
The Highlanders fell 3-1 at UIC on Thursday despite outshooting the Flames. The lone NJIT goal came from Hugo Tavares in the 59th minute to level the game at one apiece. UIC responded with goals in the 72nd and 74th minute to claim a 3-1 victory in the 2023 lidlifter.
