Swede advances from Columbus sectional on "Golf Longest Day"

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- David Nyfjäll earned a coveted spot in the field at the 2023 United States Open and will make his professional debut next week at Los Angeles Country Club. Golf's third major of the season will be hosted on the North Course from June 15-18.

There was a record number of entries this year to try to reach the national championship—10,187. From those hopeful masses, USGA local qualifiers whittled down the final number of contestants for Open spots to the 645 players who competed over 36 holes at 10 venues on Monday in golf's so-called "Longest Day," in search of one of 45 invitations to play at LACC.

Nyfjäll was one of four players at Brookside Golf and Country Club who finished at eight-under 136 to play off for three spots. The Northwestern alum, together with tour player Kevin Streelman and Alabama sophomore Nick Dunlap advanced when 2009 U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover missed a two-foot par putt to fall to first alternate.

There will be a significant Wildcats contingent in Southern California for the event, as Nyfjäll will be joined by fellow Northwestern alums Dylan Wu and Matt Fitzpatrick, the reigning U.S. Open champion after his dramatic 2022 victory at The Country Club.
The Uppsala, Sweden, native just capped a decorated college career during which he became the Wildcats first four-time First Team All-Big Ten honoree since former world No. 1 Luke Donald.
