EVANSTON, Ill. - For the first time since 2012, a Northwestern lacrosse player has been named the Honda Sport Award winner. Izzy Scane took home the honors as this year's lacrosse recipient as announced by Chris Voelz, Executive Director of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA).
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 47 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics." The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2023 Honda Cup, which will be presented on a live telecast on CBS Sports Network on June 26, at 7:30 p.m. CT.
Scane was chosen by a vote of administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Finalists included Delaney Sweitzer (Syracuse), Sam Thacker (Denver) and Jillian Wilson (Loyola Maryland).
Scane's 99 goals on the season led the nation and also set the program record for single-season scoring, breaking her previous record of 98. Her efforts helped secure a treble for the Wildcats — the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles and an NCAA Championship.
Her prolific goalscoring endeavors earned her the 2023 Tewaaraton Award, bestowed annually to the top women's collegiate lacrosse player in the nation, and she was named the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Player of the Year. Scane was also honored as the IWLCA Attacker of the Year and earned her second Big Ten Attacker of the Year accolade.
The Clarkston, Michigan, native helped lead Northwestern to the program's eighth NCAA Championship — its first since 2012 — and was named the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player after scoring 18 goals during the tournament.
Scane becomes the fourth 'Cat to win the Honda Sports Award for Lacrosse, joining three-time winner Kristen Kjellman (2005-07), two-time honoree Hannah Nielsen (2008-09), Shannon Smith (2011) and Taylor Thornton (2012).
Scane is the 10th nominee to be announced, joining Montana Fouts (Alabama, softball), Rose Zhang (Stanford, golf), Trinity Thomas (Florida, gymnastics), Caitlin Clark (Iowa, basketball), Kate Douglass (Virginia, swimming and diving), Logan Eggleston (Texas, volleyball), Erin Matson (North Carolina, field hockey), Lilly Reale (UCLA, soccer) and Katelyn Tuohy (N.C. State, cross country).
The CWSA, entering its 47th year, has honored the nation's top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its partnership in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs.
