Both members of duo have three years of eligibility remaining

EVANSTON, Ill. (May 30, 2023) – Northwestern University head volleyball coach Shane Davis bolstered his roster for the upcoming 2023 season on Tuesday with the addition of transfers Lauren Carter (Winterset, Iowa/Winterset/Denver) and Rylen Reid (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Fremd/Florida Gulf Coast).  Both Carter and Reid have three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Lauren Carter, 5-10, Setter, Winterset, Iowa (Winterset/Denver)
Carter makes her way to Evanston following one season at the University of Denver, where she appeared in 13 matches for a Pioneers team that finished 19-12 overall and 12-6 in Summit League play.  The 5-foot-10 setter dished out 48 assists (1.92 a/s), highlighted by a season-best 17 helpers in a matchup with Western Michigan on August 26.

Part of a 2022 recruiting class that was ranked 20th nationally by PrepVolleyball.com, Carter enjoyed a decorated playing career during time at Winterset High School in Winterset, Iowa, graduating as the Huskies all-time assists leader.  A three-time First Team All-Racoon River Conference (RRC) honoree, she also saw action with USA Volleyball's U18 National Training Team.

Davis on Carter: "Lauren brings a tremendous skillset and knowledge to our program.  She'll be able to run our offense from the minute she steps on campus, adding great depth to our setters group.  Lauren is responsible and outgoing, both traits we value as a staff, but, most importantly, comes from a terrific family, which includes her mother, Tina, who played collegiately at SMU before coaching.  She has high goals and aspirations for herself and our program, and I can't wait to see her achieve them here at Northwestern."

Carter on Northwestern: "I chose Northwestern because it's the perfect mix of everything I've ever dreamed of having as a collegiate student-athlete.  Northwestern volleyball has one of the most competitive, dedicated, and relatable staffs I have ever had the privilege to be around.  I feel that I'm in amazing hands as I continue my volleyball career.  Northwestern's elite academics are incredibly appealing to me.  I'm so excited to dive into all things Northwestern and be surrounded by such a challenging and rewarding academic environment.  The campus community is so tight-knit and supportive of the student body, which is something that I couldn't be more grateful to be part of.  I'm honored and pumped to be a 'Cat!"

Rylen Reid, 5-11, Outside Hitter, Rolling Meadows, Ill. (Fremd/Florida Gulf Coast)
A local product out of suburban Rolling Meadows, Ill., Reid played in 26 matches in 2022 for Florida Gulf Coast University, helping the Eagles to a 26-7 overall finish (13-3 ASUN) that included an Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.  She ripped a season-high four kills in sweeps of St. Francis Brooklyn (Sept. 17) and Stetson (Oct. 19).

Reid starred at nearby Fremd High School, racking up 901 kills and 105 aces during her three seasons playing under head coach Curt Pinley.  As a senior, the 5-foot-11 outside hitter piled up 403 kills, a mark that ranked 16th in the state of Illinois, as the Vikings rolled to a 37-3 finish.  Reid, who appeared on the club level for Adversity Volleyball Club, was a multiple-time All-Mid-Suburban League (MSL), All-Area, and All-Illinois selection, and was twice named to the PrepVolleyball.com's list of the top 150 players in the nation.

Davis on Reid: "With the addition of Rylen, we not only add an experienced arm who will compete in our gym immediately, but we bring in a super competitive and outgoing individual with a gritty and tenacious style of play.  She's a true gym rat who loves volleyball more than anything else.  We're thrilled to welcome Rylen back home and look forward to seeing her as a Wildcat."

Reid on Northwestern: "My decision to attend Northwestern University was the easiest decision I have made in my 19 years!  The University has an exceptional academic reputation that is world-renowned.  I know that getting an education from Northwestern will mean great things for my future.  Immediately after meeting the staff, I knew that all the coaches cared not only about their players' ability, but also about them as people.  The girls on the team are close and loving with one another, which only made me love Northwestern even more. They are welcoming, as well as competitive.  Finding the perfect recipe that includes a top tier education, fantastic and caring coaches, and athletic and friendly players is something I only dreamed of finding, but I did at Northwestern! I am so excited to be on campus and to start living out this dream of mine.  I can't wait to be a 'Cat!"

Carter and Reid join the previously announced quintet of graduate transfers Maddy Chinn, Ellie Husemann, and Julia Sangiacomo, and incoming first years Gigi Navarrete and Drew Wright, bringing Davis' signing class to seven.

Northwestern finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 18-14 (7-13 B1G).  The 'Cats recorded the program's top win total since 2010 and defeated three ranked opponents.
