EVANSTON, Ill. — No. 1 Northwestern, on the heels of a 15-7 drubbing of No. 5 Denver in the semifinals, will be playing for a national championship Sunday for the first time since 2012. The Wildcats will face No. 2 ranked and three-seeded Boston College. The game will start at 11:00 a.m. CT and air on ESPN.
The 'Cats and Eagles have already met each other once this season, with senior attacker Dylan Amonte and graduate student attacker Izzy Scane fueling a 15-14 comeback victory on Feb. 19. Amonte's career-high five goals and Scane's four scores saw Northwestern battle back from a four-goal halftime deficit.
Now, the Lake Show meets Boston College on the final day of the season with a national title up for grabs. The 'Cats are making their first appearance in the national championship game in over a decade, while the Eagles are appearing in their sixth consecutive title game.
Sunday's national championship game between the 'Cats and Eagles marks the two programs' second clash this season and the 11th meeting overall. Northwestern protected home turf earlier this season, though Boston College still holds the edge in all-time matchups with a 6-4 record. The two teams will meet for the first time in the NCAA Tournament since Northwestern defeated BC 11-8 at home in the first round in 2011.
Eleven years removed from Amonte Hiller's last title team, the Wildcats are looking to return to glory and secure the program's eighth national title.
