'Cats Run-Rule UIC Behind Hrustich's Six RBI

CHICAGO – Senior Stephen Hrustich collected six RBI to help lead Northwestern past the UIC Flames 17-7 in eight innings on Tuesday.
Michael Farinelli started on the mound and picked up the win for Northwestern. The right-hander went one shutout inning without giving up a hit, allowing no walks and striking out one. Reed Smith also made an impact on the mound for the Wildcats, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.
Hrustich went 2-for-4 with a home run in addition to his six RBIs for the Wildcats. Alex Calarco put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Marty Kaplan also chipped in for Northwestern, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI in his first career multi-hit outing.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wildcats got on the board immediately, scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning on a three-run homer off the bat of Hrustich.
The Northwestern offense added on with four more runs in the top of the second inning, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Hrustich, which brought the score to 7-0 in favor of the 'Cats.
UIC narrowed Northwestern's lead to 7-3 before the Wildcats stretched the advantage to 14-3 in the sixth inning. The Wildcats bats heated up in the inning, hitting five doubles in the frame and plating seven runs.
The Flames fought back, closing the gap to 14-6, before Northwestern added some insurance in the seventh. The Wildcats drove in a run on Calarco's two-out RBI double, bringing the Northwestern advantage to 15-6.
Northwestern scored two runs in the top of the eighth, highlighted by Marty Kaplan's second RBI single of the game. UIC pushed across one run in the bottom of the eighth, but it wasn't enough to extend the game as Northwestern earned the 17-7 run rule win in eight innings.
