EVANSTON, Ill. — Just a few days removed from a fourth quarter comeback victory against Michigan in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, No. 1 Northwestern will host No. 9 Loyola Maryland on Thursday, May 18 in the quarterfinals. The game will start at 6:30 p.m. CT and air on ESPNU with Jay Alter (play-by-play) and Sheehan Stanwick Burch (analyst) on the call.
In the two teams' third meeting this season, the Wolverines gave the Wildcats all they could handle in a narrow 8-7 win for the 'Cats. The Greyhounds also found themselves in a back-and-forth affair Sunday, ultimately defeating Stony Brook 9-8 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Thursday's clash between the Wildcats and Greyhounds marks just the third all-time meeting between the two schools and the first since 1986. The two programs are perennial powers within their respective conferences and continued their winning ways this season. Northwestern nabbed its third Big Ten Tournament title and a second Big Ten regular season championship, while Loyola Maryland won its ninth consecutive Patriot League regular season crown and stretched its regular season conference win streak to 75 games.
Northwestern is seeking its fourth straight NCAA semifinal appearance, and Thursday's victor will journey to Cary, N.C., one step closer to a national championship.
