NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After opening conference play over the weekend at Purdue, Northwestern baseball will head back to Indiana for a midweek matchup at Notre Dame on Tuesday. The 'Cats will face off with the Fighting Irish at 4:30 CT at Frank Eck Stadium.
The Wildcats (3-19, 1-2 B1G) visit Notre Dame (14-11, 5-7 ACC) for the first time since 2019, taking a 59-72-1 all-time record against the Irish with them. The teams last met in Evanston last May, a game then-No. 14 Notre Dame won 14-4.
Junior righty David Utagawa will take the ball for Northwestern to start off Tuesday's matchup, making his first start of the year and the sixth of his collegiate career. He'll hope to continue a streak of impressive pitching performances that began over the weekend. In Sunday's doubleheader, five pitchers combined to limit the Boilermakers to four earned runs on 11 hits over 18 innings.
The pitching was backed by big weekends from Griffin Arnone and Alex Calarco, who both continued their hot streaks. Arnone hit a home run in each of the three games at Purdue to give him six on the season. The effort extended his hitting streak to a career-high seven games, a stretch which has seen him hit .355 (11-for-31) with a .742 slugging percentage.
Calarco led the team in hits over the weekend, going 5-for-11 with a double and an RBI. He's now hitting .464 (13-for-28) over his last seven games.
After they finish play in South Bend, the 'Cats will head home and prepare to host Illinois this weekend in a three-game series to open their home Big Ten schedule at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.
