SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Six pitchers combined to toss a shutout on Tuesday as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish blanked the Northwestern Wildcats 12-0.
Junior David Utagawa (0-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Northwestern (3-20). Sophomore Grant Comstock was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one.
Senior Stephen Hrustich led the way offensively for the Wildcats, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Notre Dame struck early, plating six runs in the second inning to gain the first advantage. They added on another in the third and the sixth before driving in two each in the seventh and eighth innings. Meanwhile, Northwestern had their own chances early. They got runners as far as third twice, but were never able to drive them in the final 90 feet.
