Cam Mitchell Selected by Cleveland Browns in Fifth Round of NFL Draft

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Cleveland Browns selected Northwestern defensive back Cam Mitchell in the fifth round with the 142nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
With Mitchell's selection, three Wildcats have already been selected in this year's draft, tied for the most since 1985. Mitchell is the second Northwestern DB to be drafted in the last three years.
A two-time All-Big Ten Honorable Mention, Mitchell led Northwestern with nine passes defended in 2022. He earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week accolades last season after recording an interception, two pass breakups and six tackles in the season opening win over Nebraska.
He concluded his Northwestern career with 119 tackles, 22 pass breakups, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 35 games.
Mitchell arrived at Northwestern as a three-star recruit and appeared in four games during his true first-year season in 2019. He broke out as a key piece in the secondary of the Wildcats' legendary 2020 defense, starting eight games at cornerback and snagging his first career interception in the Big Ten Championship Game. That defense finished the season ranked fifth in the nation in scoring defense and with the Big Ten's top passing defense.
The Bolingbrook, Illinois native anchored Northwestern's secondary the next two years, earning All-Big Ten honors in each. He also earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition three times.
At the 2023 NFL Combine, Mitchell ranked fourth among all cornerbacks in the 10-yard split with a time of 1.48 seconds and seventh in the bench press with 15 reps.
