EVANSTON, Ill. -- Tony Livermore continued his hot streak with three more hits on Saturday, but the Northwestern Wildcats fell 11-7 loss to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Miller Park.
Senior Michael Farinelli (1-7) got the ball to start for Northwestern (6-27, 3-7 B1G) and took the loss.
Livermore tallied three hits, including a double and a home run to lead the Wildcats. Senior Stephen Hrustich put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Senior Evan Minarovic also chipped in for Northwestern with a two-RBI double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Wildcats first put runs on the board in the first inning. Livermore came across to score the lone run of the inning for Northwestern and get them on the board.
The Wildcats deficit grew to 8-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fifth inning. Northwestern picked up a run on Livermore's two-out solo home run off of junior Grant Besser, which tightened the Scarlet Knights lead to 8-2.
Rutgers built their lead to 11-2 before the Northwestern offense got going, reducing that lead to 11-5 in the eighth. The Wildcats picked up three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-RBI double from Minarovic.
Northwestern kept the Scarlet Knights off the board before narrowing the gap further in the ninth. Senior Kevin Ferrer's run-scoring single brought home one run in a two-run output for the Wildcats, tightening the Rutgers lead to 11-7. The Wildcats were unable to get any closer, however, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
