Writing your own story is a concept that I have talked about before in my blogs on how we are all writing our own narratives through our time as softball players at Northwestern, but most importantly we are together writing the story of our softball program. The beauty about writing a story is in the countless chapters and lessons that one story holds. Our story this season has held many different complexities and some trials, but that is our story that we are ready to own. With that being said, I cannot wait to continue to write about how much it has inspired and motivated us to turn this story into something special and unforgettable.
I am proud to wear the purple uniform for a multitude of reasons, but one reason in specific that has always empowered me is how as a program we embrace challenges. For years, Northwestern is known for starting off each season in an intense environment where we always face the best-of-the-best competition. This nonconference season has been no different where we have put ourselves out there on a national stage in games where we know we will be challenged and grow as a team. For those of you who do not know, it is important to recognize that we have the No. 1 strength of schedule in the country. That is not something we are intimidated by, but rather hold onto as a badge of honor.
The lesson that Kate has given to us through that strength of schedule is–as a woman–to never fear putting ourselves out there amongst the top. She has taught us to bet on ourselves and this team from the very first game in the season and off the field which will only turn into us betting on ourselves on day one in our careers. (I know looking at the big picture is something I am starting to do more of as I get up there in age haha, but I truly do feel so equipped for the real world from the lessons this program has taught me.)
As for the past two weekends, they are part of our story that we have the power to use in whichever way we want to move forward. This weekend is all about bringing us together as one unit on how we want to embark on a journey that people will be talking about for years to come.
I am thankful to be a part of this team full of strong women who are working relentlessly every day to be better. For the people who have been working off the field waiting for their moment, such as Ayana Lindsey and more, I am so happy you all can see the amazing players shine in the light when their jersey has been called in the same way we see them dominate in practice.
Enjoy your weekend off Cats fans and rest up, because there is a bunch of exciting softball to come your way and a powerful story that is in the works.
P.S. in the meantime if you enjoy reading my work try listening to my new podcast From The Players where I interview softball players from across the country on who they are beneath the jersey and off the field.
Sincerely,
