Northwestern Drops Marathon to UT Arlington 9-8 in 13 Innings

HOUSTON, Texas -- The Northwestern Wildcats fell 9-8 in a 13-inning marathon matchup to the UT Arlington Mavericks in Houston on Friday.

Junior Luke Benneche (0-2) took the loss on the mound for Northwestern (1-15). Senior Coby Moe was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two innings, surrendering one run on one hit, walking none and striking out two.

In the batter's box, the Wildcats were led by Owen McElfatrick, who went 2-for-7 on the day with two doubles and an RBI. Sophomore Alex Calarco furnished a noteworthy performance as well, going 3-for-7 with a double and an RBI. Trent Liolios also contributed for Northwestern, putting together two hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wildcats were trailing 2-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Northwestern plated two runs off of UT Arlington pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of McElfatrick.

The Mavericks broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the sixth inning, when the Wildcats got back on the scoreboard. Northwestern pushed across a run on sophomore Alex Roessner's one-out RBI double, which tightened the Mavericks lead to 4-3.

Northwestern held the Mavericks off the scoreboard before rallying to snatch a 6-4 lead in the seventh. The Wildcats notched three runs, one on Calarco's run-scoring single.

The Mavericks fought back, closing the gap to 6-5 until Northwestern added some insurance in the eighth. Junior Tony Livermore crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Wildcats, bringing the Northwestern advantage to 7-5.

UT Arlington came back to tie the contest at seven before the Wildcats reclaimed an 8-7 advantage in the ninth inning. Northwestern scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Cooper Foard. The Wildcats were unable to hold the lead, as UT Arlington once in the ninth to send the game to extra innings.

The teams kept each other off the scoreboard through three extra innings, bringing the game to the 13th frame. UT-Arlington finally broke the tie in the bottom of the 13th, walking off to a final score of 9-8.
