Incredible Seventh Inning Rally Caps Off Stellar Weekend in OKC

3/19/2023 2:22:00 PM | Softball

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Two ranked wins, two seventh inning comebacks, a number of pitching gems and a battle with the No. 1 team in the nation headlined the Wildcats final non-conference road trip of the regular season.

Weekend Recap:

Northwestern capped off an impressive 4-1 showing at the OMNI Hall of Fame Classic in Oklahoma City with an improbable six-run rally, all with two outs, en route to a 6-4 win over Weber State. Trailing 4-0 entering the top of the seventh, Kendall Peterson jumpstarted the rally with a two-out pinch hit double to drive in a pair. The 'Cats proceeded to cut the lead to one and load the bases for Jordyn Rudd. Rudd came through with a bases-clearing three-RBI double to put the 'Cats on top for good, 6-4.

One game prior, Rudd was also the hero for the Wildcats as she hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to drive in her and Maeve Nelson in a 6-5 win over #19 Auburn. Trailing at one point, 5-2, the Wildcats clawed their way back with a two-run home run by Emmie Farnam, her first of the season, before Rudd delivered the dagger in the seventh.

A trio of pitching gems were the story of the Wildcats first three games in Oklahoma City. In their Friday opener, Danielle Williams tossed a complete game while allowing just one run in a 2-1 win over #19 Auburn, the first of two wins over the ranked Tigers throughout the weekend. Williams struck out seven and allowed just five hits throughout the game.

Later that evening, Northwestern went toe-to-toe with the two-time defending national champions, No. 1 Oklahoma, in a 2-1 setback. Lauren Boyd started in the circle and was masterful in the circle, allowing just two hits and one run via a solo homer in 5.0 innings of work. The Sooners took a 2-0 lead into the final inning before Hannah Cady cut the deficit to one with a solo home run to center field off Oklahoma ace Nicole May. It marked the first run May has allowed all season in 49.0 scoreless innings to open the 2023 season.

On Saturday, Williams continued her lockdown efforts in the cirlce with 5.2 scoreless innings against Weber State while striking out a season-high 10 batters en route to her second win on the weekend. Angela Zedak and Kelsey Nader each drove in runs with RBI-singles, while Ayana Lindsey and Nader provided the other two runs scored via wild pitches.

Top Performers:
  • Jordyn Rudd led all Northwestern hitters with six hits, five RBI, three runs scored, a .688 slugging percentage and a .444 on-base percentage. Rudd logged an extra-base hit in each of the Wildcats' last three games of the weekend.
  • Hannah Cady posted a .333 batting average (5-for-15) with two doubles, two runs scored and a home run.
  • Danielle Williams went 2-0 with a 0.55 ERA (1 ER/12.2 IP) and 17 strikeouts in her two appearances. Over the Wildcats' last three weekends of action, Williams has a 4-0 record with two saves and a 0.49 ERA (2 ER/28.2 IP) to go along with 33 strikeouts.
  • Lauren Boyd posted a 0.81 ERA (1 ER/8.2 IP) while striking out 10 and limiting batters to a .103 opposing batting average in her two appearances this weekend.
Look Ahead:
The Wildcats return home on Tuesday, March 21 for Opening Day against UIC, before hosting Minnesota from March 24-26 at Sharon J. Drysdale Field to open Big Ten play.
