Penn State Tops Northwestern in Overtime at Big Ten Tournament, 67-65

CHICAGO – Northwestern fell, 67-65, to Penn State in overtime in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals at United Center on Friday.
The Wildcats (21-11) had two players score in double figures, led by Boo Buie, who had 16 points, four assists and two steals. Brooks Barnhizer tacked on a double-double off the bench with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Northwestern dominated the turnover battle, forcing 15 Nittany Lion turnovers while committing just four. Those takeaways turned into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year Chase Audige, Buie, and Matthew Nicholson each notched two steals for the Wildcats.

After a slow shooting start for both teams, Northwestern took an 18-14 lead with 4:20 remaining in the first half. Penn State responded with an 11-3 run to take a 25-21 lead with 1:47 remaining. Northwestern scored the half's final five points to head into the locker room with a 26-25 lead. Penn State's 25 first half points were its fewest in a half since scoring 24 in the first half against Northwestern on March 1.
Penn State scored the first six points out of the break to take a 31-26 lead, and stretched that lead all the way to seven with 10:11 remaining. The 'Cats fought back with a 9-0 run of their own, culminating with a pair of Robbie Beran free throws, to seize a 47-45 lead with 6:15 to go in regulation. The teams traded leads for the remainder of regulation, before a Penn State field goal with 37 seconds remaining tied the game at 56 and forced overtime.
Penn State took a 66-62 lead in overtime before a Barnhizer layup cut the deficit in half with 16 seconds remaining. The Wildcats sent Penn State to the free throw line, where they split a pair to take a 67-64 lead with seven seconds remaining. Penn State fouled Boo Buie, who made the first free throw and missed the second, with Northwestern corralling the rebound and missing a potential game-winning three-pointer as time expired.
