MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Northwestern women's basketball will open the Big Ten Tournament against Rutgers on Wednesday afternoon at Target Center, playing in the second of the day's two games. Tip-off between the 'Cats and the Scarlet Knights is scheduled for 25 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
The Wildcats (9-20, 2-16) enter the week's slate as the 14 seed and will face off with Rutgers (11-19, 5-13), the 11 seed. Wednesday's meeting will be the second in less than a month for the two programs, who met in Piscataway on February 15. The Scarlet Knights came out on top of that matchup, overcoming a first-half deficit to best the 'Cats, 62-48. In tournament play, it will be the second meeting between the programs all-time and the first since 2015.
Northwestern wrapped up the regular season on the road at Nebraska on Sunday, and though they didn't come away with the victory, they received double-digit scoring performances from three players. Paige Mott paced the 'Cats with 18 points and six rebounds, both of which led the team. Hailey Weaver contributed 12 points and three steals, while Caroline Lau added 11 points and three steals.
On the defensive end, grad student Sydney Wood will enter the tournament one day removed from being named to the 2023 Big Ten All-Defensive Team - the second such award of her career. Wood was honored after racking up 74 steals and 32 blocks, which rank second and sixth in the Big Ten respectively. She's now tenth on Northwestern's single-season steals list and third in career steals with the 'Cats.
Should Northwestern come away with the victory over Rutgers, they'd advance to the second round of the tournament to face off with Illinois on Thursday night. That game would tip off 25 minutes after the conclusion of tournament game five, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
